In 2014 A. Kh. Khalikov Institute of Archeology of Tatarstan Academy of Sciences jointly with the Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University decided to hold an annual International Archaeology Field School on the basis of the  State Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve in Bolgar, Republic of Tatarstan.

The purpose of organizing the school is to consolidate domestic and foreign scientific and educational resources for the introduction of the latest achievements of world science into the practice of studying and preserving the historical and cultural heritage of the peoples of Eurasia.

The School’s work program is aimed at introducing the latest scientific methods into the practice of current and future archaeological research, the comprehensive implementation of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of archaeological sites and the preservation of cultural heritage, the development of modern methods of presentation and actualization of archaeological heritage. The International Archaeological School in Bolgar contributes to ensuring access of young students to relevant scientific information and archaeological research activities; popularization of archeology, history, restoration and museum business; training of new scientific personnel; develops applied self-service skills of members of the expedition team in the field; forms a habit of creative work, proper regime and healthy lifestyle; successful socialization of young people.

Along with the scientific and practical work in the laboratories in the areas of the school program involves a general course of lectures on the theory and methodology of preserving and studying the historical and cultural heritage, as well as modern technologies of field research.

School participants also have the opportunity to conduct research projects at specialized school sites under the guidance of leading Russian and foreign teachers, as well as publish the results of their research in the collection of materials of the International Archaeological School, which is included in the RSCI and SCOPUS.

The school traditionally ends with a final conference where participants have the opportunity to present the results of their research projects.
